Women Work Better in Warmer Offices, According to Study

A study published in the journal PLOS One says that women perform cognitive tasks better in warmer rooms, while men do better when it’s colder. It’s an interesting conclusion that business or building owners might want to consider when working to improve office comfort.

In this article, Dittmer Air and Heat, a trusted expert in commercial air conditioning and indoor air quality testing, shares more information about this recent study.

Women Perform Better in Warmer Temperatures, While Men Do Best in Colder Rooms

The debate about office thermostat settings in the workplace is often divided according to sex. Women, for example, typically favor a warmer workspace, while men want a cooler environment. The reasons for these differences are considered to be two-fold: biological and sociological.

Biological. Men are more likely to feel warmer because they expend more energy at rest than women do. Meanwhile, women naturally have higher core temperatures, which means they feel the cold more easily.

Sociological. From a sociological perspective, office dress codes usually require men to wear suits or jackets. Women, on the other hand, have the option of wearing skirts or dresses, especially on warmer days.

Creating a Comfortable Workspace for All

Building a comfortable workspace entails more than just ensuring HVAC systems are working properly and performing HVAC air conditioner repair when necessary. A huge part of this effort also involves maintaining a balanced temperature that’s comfortable for everyone working in the office.

Study co-author Agne Kajackaite, an ethics and behavioral economics researcher at the Berlin Social Science Center, says that to figure out this balance, people should take note of when they feel most comfortable in a working or learning environment. She explains that temperature can not only impact one’s comfort, but the employees’ daily performance as well.
